World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated each year on March 21. The 21st day of the 3rd month of the year was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome.
People with Down Syndrome and intellectual disabilities encounter stereotypes every day. This can lead to people with disabilities being underestimated, excluded, treated poorly, and even abused. People with Down syndrome are just like everyone else. They have similar dreams and goals, and they want to have successful careers and families.
Did you know? Down Syndrome is the most frequent chromosomal disorder. It occurs in approximately 1 in 700 births. Down Syndrome is a lifelong condition, but many individuals with Down Syndrome grow up to have jobs, live independently, and enjoy various recreational activities. This year, BMS will celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by asking everyone to wear crazy, funky socks on Thursday. Show your support while having fun!
Let’s remember to RESPECT OUR COMMUNITY with KINDNESS, EMPATHY, and TOLERANCE.
