Outdoor Wildlife Courtyard
Hard work by PTA parents and a generous grant ($2,800) from Lowe's have transformed a previously mundane courtyard at Normandy Elementary into a beautiful outdoor classroom for students and staff to enjoy and explore.
Parent Andrea Schwartz applied for the Toolbox for Education grant, and she and co-chairs Cassia Schell and Heather Ransom, organized Normandy parents, who provided the muscle and skill. The courtyard centerpiece, a small pond with a fountain, contains turtles and fish.
Special plants, including some to attract butterflies (Normandy is a regular stop each fall for Monarch butterflies migrating from Canada), have been planted, wooden boardwalk type walks have been installed, and patios with colorful benches and umbrella tables await students who will use the space as an outdoor classroom and reading area with a calming atmosphere.
